Pigfeed with a taste of raspberries

Hundreds of screaming piglets run around.. They are hungry and Cas (11) and his friend Jelt (12) from Zijtaart (place) are going to feed them. From their cart with chunks a sweet odour takes off . “This feed with soya has got a raspberry taste. Piglets love sweet.”

Dressed in overalls Cas en Jelt walk trough the stables of "the Dalton farm". The boys often help in the company with feeding the piglets and sweeping the stables. Cas is a real pigs expert.
"If the piglets are three days old they receive an anaesthetic injection. I help with the lifting. Their tail is being melted off. If we don't do that, they will bite each others tail. They also receive a number in their ear. That is not a nice job. It takes a long time and because of the heat you'll start sweating. If you touch one of the lamps, you'll burn your self. Some of the pigs are angry because you are touching their kids. They'll start to bark and almost push you over with their nose.”

I will only eat meat from our pigs.

Bevallen

In this shed some 14.000 piglets are born every year.

Scannen

“Preferably I work with the handpalm computer. There is a scanner in there. Every pig has a chip in her ear. If you hold the scanner up against the chip, you'll see all the information about the sow. For example how long she is pregnant, or how much she had to eat. Everything is recorded digitally. The information is send via the computer to the feeding station. The automatic gates of the feeding station also read the information from the chip.” Your own stomach also starts to rattle from all that talking about food. The two friends are going in for a sandwich with ... sausage!

Meatball

Soya burgers or milk are not their cup of tea.
“I only eat meat from our own pigs. They are being slaughtered somewhere else,” says Cas. Preferably he eats a schnitzel.
“For me, rather a meatball please," says Jelt.

Piglets love sweet.
